How Rommie came back to life after an aggressive canine cancer

In Decatur, Illinois, eight-year-old Rommie lived a happy life with his mom Polena, until May of last year when the Weimaraner started to feel strange, refused to eat, and was often vomiting. Polena was afraid that Rommie might have canine cancer.

The worst of it all was that Rommie just wanted to be left alone, a very unusual behaviour for this social and happy big boy. Polena was heartbroken and immediately took Rommie to the vet. At first the vet was not sure what was going on, but she found the dog to be extremely anemic. A series of tests and treatments ensued. After several X-rays, ultrasounds, and blood tests, the vet decided to take a biopsy. The results were devastating. Rommie was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma, a very aggressive form of liver and spleen cancer.

Because of Rommie’s anemia, surgery was not an option and the vet sent Rommie and his mom home. She gave the dog two weeks. “We were devastated,? Polena says. “Rommie was going down slowly but surely.?

Polena and her husband did not want to give up. They started looking for information online to learn more about Rommie’s cancer type, and they found Life Gold. “We had nothing to lose and decided to try it,? Polena remembers. At first, the treatment did not seem to make any difference. Rommie was in so much pain that Polena’s husband was ready to put him to sleep. He could not take it any  more. Polena begged her husband to give the dog one more day.

This is the one day that Polena fondly remembers. “Rommie started to walk around the yard and even showed some interest in squirrels,? she says excitedly. Afterwards, the recovery went fast, very fast. “After three days, he was running around, playing with the neighbours’ dogs, and going outside on his own.?

A month after Rommie was diagnosed with cancer, his parents believe the recovery is a miracle. “It is unbelievable how close we were to saying Goodbye to our Rommie,? Polena says.

Now the optimism has returned to the family who hopes to spend many more months with the big boy. “I am a very realistic person but if anybody asked me now: Do you believe in miracles? I will answer: Yes, I see it with my own eyes,? Polena says.
