Most pet parents only think about "gut health" when there's an obvious digestive symptom — vomiting, diarrhea, a sudden refusal to eat. But according to Dr. Odette Suter, DVM, speaking at the Pet Health Accelerator masterclass, that's exactly the wrong place to start looking.
"Your pet may have zero digestive symptoms," Dr. Suter explains — and the gut can still be at the center of the issue.
The Root Dr. Suter Points To
Her framework centers on two connected concepts: leaky gut and dysbiosis.
"We have to address leaky gut and dysbiosis, which is an imbalance of the microbial flora within the gut, because this is at the root of almost every health issue your pet has, whether or not they show any kinds of gut-related symptoms."
The reasoning follows the body's own wiring. As Dr. Suter puts it, "the brain, the mouth, the teeth, [adrenal] glands, the heart, pancreas, skin, anal glands, the bladder, the liver, the kidneys — everything is connected to the gut."
That systemic connection is why gut imbalance doesn't always look like a gut problem. In Dr. Suter's words: "gut issues create inflammation everywhere, and it may look like diarrhea, but it may also look like arthritis, or it may manifest in bad skin issues."
Her Approach: Restore, Then Support Systemically
Dr. Suter's core principle is straightforward: "we need to restore the gut lining and the microbial community, because leaky gut and dysbiosis are the big first domino." From there, she advocates for treating the whole picture rather than chasing individual symptoms: "you have to use a systematic approach to heal the body."
Her foundational recommendation starts with diet: "we start by providing a species-appropriate, balanced diet that's composed of fresh, minimally processed ingredients that contain all the nutrients that the cells need."
What This Means for Your Routine
Dr. Suter's framework is a helpful reminder that gut support isn't just a reaction to a bad week of digestion — it's a foundational piece of whole-body wellness, whether your pet shows obvious symptoms or not. A species-appropriate diet, minimal processing, and gentle, consistent gut support are all pieces of that foundation.
