Keeping Pets Moving Comfortably: Because Nobody Told Them They Were Supposed to Slow Down
As a veterinary technician, I've seen firsthand how common stiffness and mobility changes are in our pets. And pets did not get the memo that they're supposed to "act their age."
The senior dog may be 12 years old, but he still believes he's fully qualified to chase a squirrel across the yard. The cat may have some creaky joints, but she remains convinced the kitchen counter is still her personal penthouse. Supporting healthy mobility throughout life helps keep those adventures going as comfortably as possible.
The best part? Joint and mobility support doesn't have to wait until your pet has trouble getting around. A proactive approach can be part of lifelong wellness, from their first zoomies to their golden years.
Start Young, Stay Moving
Puppies and kittens have about two speeds: sleeping and causing chaos.
That enthusiasm is wonderful, and regular, age-appropriate exercise helps support healthy muscles, joints, coordination and mobility. Walking, playing, swimming (when appropriate) and other activities keep their bodies conditioned.
Just remember that more isn't always better. Young pets are still developing, so match exercise to their age, size, breed and individual needs.
Keep Them Lean
One of the simplest ways to support your pet's joints at any age is to keep a lean body condition. Those extra pounds aren't just extra fluff. They put additional demands on the joints every single day.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Your Pet's Mobility Cheerleader
Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, play an important role in supporting normal inflammatory balance and overall wellness. A quality omega-3 source can be a great addition to your pet's routine, and it supports more than one aspect of health.
Think of it as adding another player to your pet's wellness team. Preferably one that doesn't shed all over the couch.
Feed the Body, Not Just the Bowl
A balanced, nutritious diet with quality ingredients helps provide what your pet needs for normal muscle function, healthy connective tissue and everyday wellness. It also makes a healthy body condition easier to maintain. Many pet parents add whole-food ingredients for extra nutrients and antioxidants.
Water: Supporting Wellness From Nose to Toes
Adequate moisture supports normal body function, and it matters even more as pets age. Wet food, adding appropriate moisture to meals, and putting fresh water in appealing spots all encourage good fluid intake.
Apparently some cats believe the only acceptable water source is the glass you just poured for yourself.
Turn Your House Into a Mobility-Friendly Zone
If your pet is starting to show stiffness or mobility changes, take a look around the house.
- Add traction. Hardwood floors look fantastic, but to an older pet they can feel like an indoor skating rink. Rugs and nonslip runners help pets feel secure on their feet.
- Upgrade the bed. A memory foam or orthopedic-style bed gives them a comfortable place to rest. Make sure it's easy to get in and out of, because even the most luxurious bed won't help if reaching it takes a climbing expedition.
Of course, there's still a very real chance your pet will choose the laundry pile instead.
Support Your Fur Family at Every Stage of Life
- Young pets: Age-appropriate exercise, balanced nutrition, healthy growth, omega-3s when appropriate, and a lean body condition.
- Adult pets: Keep them moving, maintain a healthy weight, feed nutritious meals, consider omega-3s and joint-supportive supplements, and watch for subtle changes in how they move.
- Senior pets: Think comfort, comfort and more comfort. Gentle regular exercise, good traction, supportive bedding, plenty of moisture, good nutrition, and joint and mobility support all help promote quality of life.
When to Talk to Your Veterinarian
Changes in mobility shouldn't be dismissed as "just getting old." Talk with your veterinarian if you notice:
- Reluctance to climb stairs or jump
- Difficulty getting up
- Limping or changes in gait
- Decreased activity or a noticeable change in normal movement
We can't stop aging. But we can support our pets along the way, enjoy more good days together, and keep their squirrel-chasing dreams alive for years to come.
